Short answer: it varies enormously from creator to creator, and nobody can promise you a fixed amount. Viewers buy Coins and use them to send you Gifts. In return you get Diamonds, which you can have paid out through TikTok. How much that brings in depends on your audience, how often you go LIVE and how you engage with your viewers.

From Gift to money: how it works

  1. Coins. A viewer buys Coins in the TikTok app or on the TikTok website. To do this, the viewer must be 18 or over.
  2. Gifts. During your LIVE, the viewer sends a Gift, such as a rose or a bigger animated Gift. Each Gift costs a number of Coins.
  3. Diamonds. TikTok awards you Diamonds based on the popularity of your LIVE, including the Gifts you receive. After your LIVE, the summary shows how many Diamonds you have collected.
  4. Payout. You can convert Diamonds in the app and have them paid out using the methods TikTok offers in your country. You can see the current terms, such as a minimum amount, in the app under your balance.

Good to know: a Gift worth 100 Coins does not give you 100 Coins' worth of money. TikTok keeps a share, and the app stores charge fees too. On top of that, under TikTok's policy, Diamonds do not automatically entitle you to a reward, and TikTok can withhold Diamonds for violations.

Who can receive Gifts?

According to TikTok, you must:

  • live somewhere LIVE Gifts are available (they are in the Netherlands);
  • be 18 or over;
  • be allowed to go LIVE (see when you can go LIVE on TikTok);
  • have an account in good standing.

You turn Gifts on or off in the settings on the LIVE screen, before you go LIVE.

Why nobody can promise you an amount

Online you often see example calculations and "calculators". At best they give a rough idea, because:

  • the ratio between Coins, Diamonds and euros is not fixed and differs by country and payment method;
  • TikTok does not publish the value of Diamonds as a fixed amount;
  • most of the difference comes down to your audience: how big, how loyal and how engaged it is.

An agency that promises you a fixed amount per month, or money back on your Gifts, is a red flag. Promises like these are not allowed under TikTok's rules.

What really determines your earnings

  • Consistency. Going LIVE on fixed days and at fixed times builds a regular group of viewers.
  • Interaction. Viewers send Gifts to creators they feel connected to, not because they are asked to.
  • A clear topic. People come back for something: music, gaming, good company, a craft or a talent.
  • Battles and events. A short competition with another creator can bring in new viewers, as long as it suits your style.
  • No violations. If you get a violation, TikTok can temporarily turn off your Gifts. Then you earn nothing. Read the rules of TikTok LIVE.

Does an agency take a share of your earnings?

Not at Grow Connect. TikTok pays your share directly to you. Agencies receive a fee from TikTok for their support, and it is not taken from what you earn. More in what a TikTok LIVE agency does.
