Short answer: yes. LIVE Gifts are available in the Netherlands, you can work with brands and you can sell your own products through your profile. You do need to be 18 or over to receive Gifts, and what you earn is income you pay tax on.

What works in the Netherlands

  • LIVE Gifts. Viewers send you Gifts during your LIVE. In return you get Diamonds that you can have paid out. See how much you earn with TikTok LIVE.
  • Brand partnerships. Dutch brands look for creators with an engaged audience, including smaller accounts.
  • Your own products or services. Through a link in your bio or a mention in your videos.
  • TikTok programmes for videos. You can see which ones are available in the Netherlands in the app under TikTok Studio.

The requirements

  • 18 or over to go LIVE and receive Gifts.
  • Usually 1,000 followers to go LIVE. Read when you can go LIVE on TikTok.
  • An account without violations. If you get violations, TikTok can restrict Gifts or LIVE.

Tax: what should you look out for?

What you earn with TikTok counts as income in the Netherlands. This applies to Gifts, paid partnerships and free products you get from brands in exchange for content. A few points to keep in mind:

  • Earning something now and then often falls under 'income from other activities' (resultaat uit overige werkzaamheden). You declare it in your income tax return.
  • If you do it on a regular basis, with the aim of making a profit, you may count as self-employed. Then you may need to register with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) and VAT comes into play.
  • Keep your records: payouts from TikTok, invoices from brands and costs you make, such as a lamp or microphone.

We don't give tax advice, because your situation determines what applies to you. If in doubt, check the website of the Dutch Tax Administration (Belastingdienst) or ask an adviser.

Advertising rules

If you work with brands, you must make advertising recognisable. In the Netherlands, the rules of the Dutch advertising code for social media and influencers (Reclamecode) apply: state clearly that it is a partnership, for example with TikTok's paid partnership setting and a label such as "#ad" or "advertentie".

What you'd better not do

  • Buying Coins or Gifts through anyone other than TikTok itself. This is not allowed and can cost you your account.
  • Buying followers or viewers. Against TikTok's rules.
  • Falling for promises of a fixed income. Nobody can guarantee you that.
  • Streaming through a VPN or pretending to be in another country. TikTok looks at where you really are, and agencies may only support creators who stream in their own market.
